the site has been recognized by heritage canada for a while. the canadian government announced its _intent_ to make pier 21 a federal museum in june 2009, but this does not necessarily mean it will happen, or what changes it will entail. the pedagogy that exists at the museum right now has problems of its own and it will also be interesting to see what effect federal status will have, again, if any.

I wonder if it'll take a similar effort by local residents to get the Halifax Memorial Library turned into a City Museum of some sort too...

I think it's incredible that the development of the museum was a result of the volition of the people -- researchers and alumni who sought out investors -- not a government initiative. Such an important reality in the country's history, a "wonder" of Canada... and it took ten years for the government to answer civil society's call, and finally recognize it? I wonder what the museum was like before the federal government endorsed it... if there were different stories captured.
