Events Guide: Peasants’ Day and Seedy Saturday

HALIFAX - As springtime sun coaxes greenery back onto our urban landscape, it seems to have brought food sovereignty issues with it. This Saturday is chock full of food and agriculture related events, starting with Peasant's Day. An international event, Peasant's Day is celebrates local, sustainable food and opposes a world food system run by agri-business. Starting at the Farmer's Market, a family-friendly march will head up to the North Common, where it will be met with a celebration, including food, speakers, info, entertainment, drum circle, puppets, face painting, guerrilla gardening & goats! Speakers include Gerard Choplin of Via Campesina European Coordination, members of the National Farmers Union, and local food activists.

And if you're inspired  to bring the movement to your own backyard, the Urban Farm Museum Society of Spryfield is holding its 12th Annual Seedy Saturday (not affiliated with Peasant's Day), where you can swap and buy seeds, pick up organic supplies, take advantage of free gardening advice from experts, enjoy Kids’ Corner, head to a workshop, and more!
