Events Guide: Earth Day in HRM

HALIFAX - In honour of Earth Day, Halifax Regional Municipality has planned a series of activities which are sure to appease your inner pedestrian, cyclist, and gardener. City staff and councillors will be in attendance, so this is a great opportunity to show them that the environment, community gardening, and pedestrian and cycling infrastructure are civic priorities.
WHAT: Dartmouth HarbourFront Trail walk
WHEN: 10:30-11am
WHERE: meets at the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal parking lot
WHAT: Ecology Action Centre Donation
DETAILS: "In addition to a donation of two rain barrels from Halifax Water, Mayor Kelly will give a $1,000 donation on behalf of HRM to the Ecology Action Centre to support community gardens through the Urban Garden Project."
WHEN: noon
WHERE: City Hall
WHAT: Community bike ride, in partnership with the Halifax Cycling Coalition, Clean Nova Scotia and the Halifax Region Police
WHEN: noon-1pm
WHERE: starts and finishes at Grand Parade
WHAT: Potato Tower-Building Workshop, in partnership with Goodness Grows Dartmouth Gardening Association and the Ecology Action Centre
DETAILS: "Come learn how to grow potatoes in small, urban spaces using vertical potato towers. Using affordable building materials and simple design, the towers allow any urban garden to grow a full harvest of potatoes."
WHEN: 5:30-6:30pm
WHERE: Findlay Community Centre, Dartmouth
WHAT: Interpretive Nature Walk in Fleming Park, lead by HRM's Adventure Earth Centre staff
DETAILS: "an evening of earth walk and nature activities followed by displays and refreshments."
WHEN: 6-8:30pm
