Events Guide: Change of (s)Pace, a Halifax Jane’s Walk

HALIFAX - Spacing Atlantic contributors are hosting a Jane's Walk in Halifax this upcoming Saturday May 1st. Come join us as we wander the urban space, ponder the changes we face, and help to set the pace.

The general theme of the Halifax walk is change, transformation, and transition — the downtown is in limbo and we want to muse about it. Meet us on Lower Water St outside the Farmers' Market at noon, as we set off to investigate an urban landscape in flux.

Jane’s Walk honours the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to planning. Jane’s Walk often takes Jacobs’ ideas to communities unfamiliar with her ideas, in order to advance local engagement with contemporary urban planning practices.  The walks — which take place in cities across North America every first weekend in May — help to knit people together into a strong and resourceful community, instilling belonging and encouraging civic leadership.

There's tons of local expertise on all kinds of transformations facing Halifax, and we aim to incite a spontaneous knowledge sharing experience, where any walker is invited to call for a quick huddle up to share a story, some info, a critique, or idea. Got a thought on the new Seaport Farmers' Market? A beef with the infill of the pit? An anecdote on the old Chronicle Herald building? Join, and we'll make space for you.

WHAT: Change of (s)Pace - A Jane's Walk in Halifax hosted by Spacing Atlantic
WHERE: We'll meet outside of the market on Lower Water Street
